ACRELab was originally conceived as a laboratory for testing remote area power supply (RAPS) components and systems. Two independent test beds were designed into the laboratory; a small system test area aimed at single phase systems up to 5 kW and a large test area focused on single or three phase systems up to 50 kW. With the growing interest in Grid-connected inverters, ACRELab has also developed the capability of testing such inverters.

As part of an ongoing involvement in standards development and the pursiuit of improved reliability in RE systems, ACRELab staff have also expanded the testing work into the area of Solar Home Systems and battery charge controllers for PV systems.

Training and development of human resources in the field of renewable energy is also one of the major objectives and competencies of ACRELab
